Saturday brunching: Rotunda, Kings Cross
Brunch is my favourite word. (Apart from ‘bramble’. I’ve got a soft spot for that word too).
And this morning I found myself scampering through the last signs of Autumn to Kings Cross, to meet a very dear pal for brunch at the newly refurbished Rotunda.
It’s always such a treat to meet a friend for my favourite meal, but today was made all the more special as the weather was simply gorgeous. The light bounced off the canal in Kings Cross, creating sparkles in the sunshine… and everywhere I looked were folk clutching coffees, strolling in their Autumnal cosies and heading this way and that… while I headed straight for Rotunda – a bar and restaurant tucked away in Kings Place, a complex which also houses two concert halls (I didn’t realise!) two art galleries (yep!) several private functions spaces, and also a number of offices…
I am still recovering from my blasted cold, so as soon as I arrived took a seat outside in the sun, under a blanket, and ordered an almond milk latte to warm me up happily ticking the ‘dairy free’ box. (Did you know dairy is a disaster for colds? Well it is. You have been told). Then I came back inside to meet my friend who arrived a few minutes later…
I was immediately struck by the curve and sweep of the restaurant – it reminded me a little of being on a ship, and with the amazing views of the canal outside it was as if we were on holiday.
And then I spied the amazing meat cabinet – highlighting a ‘gate to plate’ ethos from day one has enabled Rotunda to utilise the company’s own 288- acre Corneyside Farm in Matfen, Northumberland, which has stocks of 750 breeding sheep, 1300 lambs, 300 cattle and 20 pure-bred Texel-cross stock rams, all of which have been born on the farm.
My friend and I chatted over coffee, eggs (amazing eggs) and the most beautifully presented food. It was all utterly delicious and I am already looking forward to going back for lunch or dinner. The whole menu was extremely tempting and picking what to have was Not Easy. So the prospect of returning is very exciting…
We had such a gorgeous morning at Rotunda and I could have stayed there all day long, however chores awaited (what is it with babies and laundry? Holy moly) and home beckoned.
We walked back to the station in the November sun and I couldn’t help but feel a ping of magic in the air. What glorious weather, what wonderful company and what sensational food.
Lucky, lucky me.
